Two Students Overcome Cancer and Serious Illness to Graduate from University of Puerto Rico

Updated Jun 24, 2026 · via Primera Hora

Viviana Enid García González and Luis Moscoso Rivera, two students at the University of Puerto Rico at Río Piedras (UPR-RP), are set to graduate this week despite facing life-threatening diagnoses and challenges. Viviana, a 32-year-old survivor of ovarian cancer, will graduate with honors Suma Cum Laude with a master's degree in information science and databases. Luis, who received a simultaneous kidney and pancreas transplant, will obtain his bachelor's degree with honors Cum Laude in audiovisual communication with a minor in business communication.

Viviana was diagnosed with ovarian cancer three years ago and had to put her original plan of becoming a doctor on hold. She had obtained a bachelor's degree in biology from the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico and was accepted into medical school, but the school's requirements and her health issues led her to change her path. Luis, on the other hand, is looking forward to his future and enjoys reading fantasy stories in his free time.

Both students' families are extremely proud of their achievements, with Viviana's mother, Edna González, saying she is proud of her 'hasta el infinito' (to infinity).
