New Caguas Coliseum to be Named After Dr. Héctor Gregorio 'Tato' Dávila Solá

Updated Jun 26, 2026 · via Primera Hora

The new coliseum being built by the Caguas Autonomous Municipality will be named after Dr. Héctor Gregorio 'Tato' Dávila Solá, considered the father of Caguas basketball. The Municipal Legislature approved the designation through an ordinance on June 24.

Dávila Solá, a dentist by profession, founded the Caguas Amateur Basketball Association in 1968 and led the construction of the municipality's first indoor court. He also led the return of the Criollos de Caguas to the Baloncesto Superior Nacional (BSN) in 1969 and was the team's owner until 1987. The new coliseum, which is being built on the site of the old Coliseo Héctor Solá Bezares, is expected to be completed in 2028 with funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and municipal resources.

The Solá Bezares family, whose patriarch the old coliseum was named after, has given their consent for the name change, stating that Dávila Solá 'more than deserves this honor'.
