A 33-year-old man, William Cotto Olmeda, has been charged with the murder of 19-year-old Joshnell Rubén González Román, a promising basketball player, in Caguas. According to the Puerto Rico Police, Cotto Olmeda allegedly shot González Román multiple times on February 15, 2026, while the young man was inside a Ford Escape vehicle on the side of PR-30 in Caguas. A tow truck driver alerted the police after seeing bullet impacts on the vehicle's windows and body.
Cotto Olmeda fled the scene and was later charged with first-degree murder, risk to public safety, and discharging a firearm. Judge Karina Díaz Pérez found probable cause for arrest and set a $600,000 bond, which Cotto Olmeda was unable to pay, leading to his incarceration at the Bayamón Correctional Complex. The preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 8.
The investigation was led by Agent Pedro González Reyes and prosecutor Liza Morales Jusino.
