A dense cloud of Saharan dust is moving over Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, causing moderate to high concentrations and affecting air quality, according to the National Meteorological Service (SNM). The agency warned that sensitive groups, such as people with respiratory conditions, older adults, and young children, should limit outdoor activities today.
The SNM expects the high concentrations to persist until Wednesday morning. Additionally, the agency reported that the risk of rip currents in Puerto Rico remains low, with waves of three feet or less in most coastal areas.
However, authorities urged swimmers to be aware of sea conditions, especially near reefs and piers where dangerous currents can form. The SNM noted that while the risk of rip currents is low, they can still be life-threatening near reefs and piers.
