Prepare for Haze: Sahara Dust to Affect Puerto Rico Until Wednesday

Updated Jul 5, 2026 · via El Nuevo Día

The National Weather Service (SNM) in San Juan forecasted the presence of Sahara desert dust concentrations over Puerto Rico until Wednesday. According to SNM meteorologist Lee Ann Inglés, the peak concentration was expected between Saturday and Sunday, but the haze was expected to continue affecting Puerto Rico as it gradually decreases in the coming days.

A tropical wave is expected to arrive on Wednesday, bringing a brief pause. The SNM also reported a high heat risk for Sunday, affecting most heat-sensitive individuals, with temperatures already between 80 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit in the San Juan area by 7:30 am.

Inglés explained that a high cloud cover is generated by a low-pressure system near the area, leading to a hot pattern with increasing temperatures throughout the day, potentially reaching heat indices of 100 to 106 degrees in coastal and urban areas. Limited rain activity is expected, with possible thunderstorms in western sectors in the afternoon.
