San Juan Municipal Legislature Postpones Vote on Escambrón Beach Parking Lot

Updated Jun 30, 2026 · via El Nuevo Día

The San Juan Municipal Legislature removed from its agenda a discussion on a proposed ordinance to build a multi-story parking lot in front of Escambrón Beach. According to Ingrid Colberg, a municipal legislator from the Popular Democratic Party, the move does not mean the project has been withdrawn, but rather it will not be addressed in the current session.

Colberg attributed the decision to the concerns raised by her and other minority groups in the legislature, as well as community members, who criticized the project's positive report and the lack of public hearings and bidding process. The project, which would add 950 parking spaces and grant a 90-year surface right to the private company Smart Parking System, was met with opposition from the group Escambrón Unido, who argued it would worsen traffic and harm the environment.

The group's spokesperson, Gradissa Fernández, denounced the project as an attack on nature. Colberg called for public hearings and access to information on the project, which she had requested on June 26.
