Prosecutor Daisy Quintero Hernández is set to file criminal charges against 68-year-old Joel Jiménez Rivera for allegedly beating his 89-year-old mother to death in the Santana neighborhood of Arecibo on June 30. Jiménez Rivera, who was caring for his mother, was arrested on Thursday after an autopsy by pathologist Javier Serrano of the Institute of Forensic Sciences revealed that the victim, Rosalina Rivera Picón, died from severe bodily trauma resulting from a pattern of abuse.

The case was initially investigated as a suspicious death due to the victim's hematomas and traumas, but the autopsy confirmed that she died from multiple traumas. The Family Department had launched an investigation, and Agent Obed Mercado of the Arecibo CIC's Homicide Division is in charge of the investigation.
