Arecibo is a city and municipality on Puerto Rico's northern Atlantic coast, roughly 40 to 50 miles west of San Juan. It is the largest municipality on the island by land area, spread across 18 barrios plus Arecibo Pueblo, with a 2020 population of about 87,754.
Founded in 1616, Arecibo serves as the core city of its own metropolitan statistical area and is also part of the wider San Juan–Bayamón combined statistical area. Arecibo
Arecibo is located on the north shore of Puerto Rico, where the Atlantic Ocean brings consistent northeast swells during the winter months. The area features a sandy beach and a limestone reef, with a NOAA buoy and tide gauge situated just offshore to monitor conditions. The location is suitable for surfing, particularly from November to March when the northeast Atlantic swell is at its peak, ranging from 3 to 7 feet, and trade winds blow at 15 to 22 knots. The tide gauge also provides a reference point year-round.
Cueva Ventana
Known for: a cave that opens onto a panoramic valley window
Cueva Ventana — 'Window Cave' — sits on a hilltop above the Río Grande de Arecibo valley in northern Puerto Rico. A short guided hike leads through a limestone cave, past bats and Taíno petroglyphs, to a large natural opening that frames a sweeping view over the river valley and karst hills below. The walk is moderate and the payoff is the dramatic 'window' overlook — a favorite photo stop. Tours are guided and ticketed; closed-toe shoes are recommended, and it pairs well with a visit to the nearby caves and the Arecibo area.
