Don Octavio is the favorite to win the Copa San Juan, the final leg of the Puerto Rican Triple Crown, at the Hipódromo Camarero on Sunday. The horse, trained by Gilberto Escobar for JBK Stable, will be ridden by Jorge Vargas Jr., who is traveling from the United States for the event. The Copa San Juan has a purse of $82,720 and will be run over a distance of 1 3/16 miles.
Don Octavio finished second in the Derby Puertorriqueño and third in the Copa Gobernador. He will face 11 other horses, including Demoledor and Bateador, winners of the first two legs of the Triple Crown. Despite being the favorite, Don Octavio is still seeking his first win in five starts as a three-year-old.
Gran Porte and Rey Baltazar are considered the main rivals to Don Octavio, with Gran Porte having finished in the money in the first two legs of the Triple Crown.
