Yabucoa School Highlights Importance of Bees with School Beehive

Updated Jul 9, 2026 · via El Nuevo Día

The Escuela Segunda Unidad Rogelio Rosado Crespo in Yabucoa has launched a project called 'Bees in Action' to highlight the importance of bees as pollinators. The project involves the entire school, from kindergarten to eighth grade, and features a beehive in a wooden and glass box in a classroom. The school's director, Yamilis Roldán Fontánez, said the project started three years ago when a science teacher, Karen Cintrón, proposed an initiative on pollinators.

Roldán Fontánez took classes at the Escuela de Apicultura del Este and became a certified beekeeper to work with the beehive. The classroom has been equipped with a display case for the beehive, as well as informational materials and equipment for teachers to give classes. The project is funded by two US-based non-profit organizations: The Bee Cause Project and Whole Kids Foundation.

Students can observe the bees and learn about their social structure and importance in pollination. The beehive has already started producing honey and new honeycombs.
