Puerto Rico has received a $10 million federal grant to study the feasibility of extending the Tren Urbano rail system to the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport, according to the Autoridad de Transporte Integrado (ATI). The analysis is expected to take about 18 months to complete.
The announcement comes more than two decades after Tren Urbano began operating without completing all the extensions originally planned for the system when it was designed. The study will assess whether it is viable to expand the current rail line to reach the airport, a route that was envisioned in the system's original blueprint but never built.
No timeline for actual construction or additional funding decisions were specified in connection with this grant, which is limited to the feasibility analysis phase.
