New Marine Refuge Proposed for Unique Puerto Rico Shark

Updated Jul 12, 2026 · via El Nuevo Día

Scientists and fishermen are leading a proposal to establish a shark refuge in the Boca Vieja area of Cataño, Puerto Rico. The proposed refuge is located near a fishing village and is a breeding ground for the hammerhead shark (Sphyrna lewini), a species at risk of extinction.

To prevent their loss, the group is calling for a ban on shark fishing in the breeding area. The refuge aims to protect the unique shark species found in Puerto Rico.
