Puerto Rico Women's Basketball Team Wins First Centrobasket AmeriCup Qualifier

The Puerto Rico women's national basketball team defeated the US Virgin Islands 81-75 in their first game of the Centrobasket AmeriCup 2027 qualifier in Managua, Nicaragua. Zaida González led the team with 21 points, while Brianna Jones scored 14 points and Tayra Meléndez added 11 points and 9 rebounds. Imani McGee-Stafford contributed 8 points and 13 rebounds.

The team had a 14-point lead in the third quarter, but the US Virgin Islands came back to take the lead 74-75 with just over a minute left. However, a three-pointer by González gave Puerto Rico the lead back, and they secured the win with two free throws and a layup by Pamela Rosado in the final seconds. Anisha George led the US Virgin Islands with 28 points and 12 rebounds.

Puerto Rico will face Guyana in their next game on Monday.
