The Güiro and Flamboyán Festival, to be held from July 24 to 26 in Peñuelas' public plaza, will honor the municipality's farmers. The event, designed for the whole family, will feature musical performances by the Orquesta de Güiros, Hermanos Sanabria, Oscarito and Pirulo, and La Tribu, among others. It will also include the traditional Troubadour Contest and the Güiro Contest, which highlights the execution of one of the most representative instruments of Puerto Rican music.
Attendees can enjoy handicrafts, markets, health fairs, and an exhibition of antique cars. According to Mayor Josean González Febres, the festival is one of the most important cultural celebrations in the town and an opportunity to preserve expressions that are part of Puerto Rico's history. The event began in 2018, after Hurricane María, and originated from two separate activities: the Güiro Festival, which started in 1974, and the Flamboyán Festival, which has been celebrated since 1997.
The güiro has its origins in the indigenous people, while the flamboyán was present in the sugar cane harvest ritual.
