The Office of Government Ethics (OEG) has filed a complaint against Guayanilla Mayor Raúl Rivera Rodríguez for allegedly hiring his sister-in-law, Mayra Luz Borrero Torres, to a temporary position in the municipality's Head Start program. According to the complaint, Rivera Rodríguez appointed Borrero Torres to a temporary assistant teacher position twice, with monthly payments of $1,961.
The OEG alleges that Rivera Rodríguez violated the Government Ethics Law by directly intervening in the hiring of a relative. The office is seeking restitution of public funds and the maximum fine for each proven infraction.
Rivera Rodríguez has 20 working days to respond to the allegations. This is not the first time the mayor has faced ethics issues, having been fined $3,000 in May for using an official vehicle for political activities.
