Pope Leo XIV has appointed Monsignor Eusebio Ramos Morales as the new Archbishop of the San Juan Archdiocese, following the resignation of Monsignor Roberto González Nieves. Ramos Morales has been serving as the Bishop of the Diocese of Caguas since 2017 and was ordained as a priest on June 3, 1983.
He was born on December 15, 1952, in Maunabo and has a background in science and theology, having studied at the University of Puerto Rico, the Universidad Central de Bayamón, and the Pontificia Universidad Gregoriana de Roma. González Nieves, who has been the Archbishop of San Juan for 26 years, submitted his resignation after turning 75, the mandatory retirement age for bishops in the Catholic Church.
Ramos Morales will take over the position, having previously served as the first bishop of the Diocese of Fajardo-Humacao and as the president of the Conferencia Episcopal Puertorriqueña since December 4, 2024.
