The interim rector of the University of Puerto Rico's (UPR) Río Piedras campus, Mayra Charriez Cordero, announced the appointment of Dr. Brenda Toro Enríquez as the interim dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences. Toro Enríquez replaces Dr. Carmen Maldonado Vlaar, who was removed from her position on Saturday.
Charriez Cordero cited Toro Enríquez's 23 years of service to the campus, as well as her teaching and administrative experience, research trajectory, and commitment to student formation, as reasons for her appointment. At least three other officials from the Faculty of Natural Sciences have left their administrative positions, including Dr. José E. García Arrarás, who resigned as interim director of the Biology Department, and Dr.
Ingrid Montes, who stepped down as interim associate dean of Academic Affairs. García Arrarás stated that he resigned due to Maldonado Vlaar's removal and the administration's insistence on implementing additional budget cuts.
