Añasco Joins Initiative to Restore Its Coastline

Published Aug 13, 2026 · via Primera Hora

The Municipality of Añasco has joined the Rescate Costero program, led by FirstBank, to promote environmental restoration and strengthen coastal resilience in Puerto Rico. The program, which is in its third and final year, aims to fortify natural barriers that protect coastlines from erosion and atmospheric events. Añasco Mayor Kabir Solares García emphasized the importance of protecting the coastline, which was damaged by Hurricane Maria in 2021.

Ecologist Alexis Molinares noted that restoring ecosystems like dunes and mangroves can help increase the resilience of coastal communities. Since 2023, the initiative has planted 21,648 native trees, impacting over 37,743 linear feet of coastline in 22 beaches across 16 municipalities. The activity will take place on August 15 at the Tres Hermanos Municipal Beach.

The program is part of FirstBank's corporate program Uno con el Ambiente, which has promoted environmental conservation initiatives for over a decade.
