After more than 200,000 LUMA Energy customers lost power on a Saturday, the utility said the outage stemmed from a distribution line that broke due to "bad weather" at Costa Sur and fell onto a 230,000-volt line. LUMA said in a press release that its teams were investigating an incident at the Costa Sur switchyard, where the broken line caused a disturbance; seconds later, Ecoeléctrica's units went offline, triggering automatic load relief to protect the system.
Earlier, Genera PR and Ecoeléctrica had attributed the outage to a fire at the 230 kV switchyard operated by LUMA Energy, with Genera PR sharing videos and a photo on social media platform X showing flames and smoke. LUMA denied this was the cause, stating: "Although it was initially reported as fire, there is no fire in the vicinity of the switchyard." LUMA had initially attributed the outage to insufficient generation.
By 9:10 p.m., about 195,697 customers remained without service, most of them in the Ponce region, which had 46,769 affected customers.
