The 17th edition of the Puerto Rico Film Festival aims to internationalize Puerto Rican cinema. Director Lester Rivé stated that the festival has been focused on getting local productions into other festivals and exhibition spaces worldwide. This year's edition, taking place from August 19 to 23, 2026, in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, features the historic Teatro Yagüez as a main venue.

The festival includes film exhibitions, conversations, tribute ceremonies, and classes for cinema enthusiasts and professionals. Rivé highlighted the Cine Next program, which provides a platform for university and high school students to showcase their work and participate in talks and workshops. This year, Ángel Manuel Soto, director of 'Blue Beetle,' will give a talk to students.

The festival seeks to create opportunities for local filmmakers, promote learning, and establish collaborations with other festivals. With Puerto Rico gaining recognition for its cinematic productions, Rivé believes there is an opportunity to strengthen local cinema and position it internationally.
