Mayagüez is a coastal city on the center of Puerto Rico's western coast, about 70 miles from San Juan. Founded in 1760 as Pueblo de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria de Mayagüez, it is the ninth-largest municipality on the island, with a population of about 73,077 across roughly 60 square kilometers.
The city serves as the principal hub of the Mayagüez Metropolitan Statistical Area and the larger Mayagüez–Aguadilla Combined Statistical Area, anchoring the west region economically and administratively. It carries several historic nicknames — La Sultana del Oeste, Ciudad de las Aguas Puras, and Ciudad del Mangó — and in 1894 the Spanish Crown granted it the formal title of Excelente Ciudad de Mayagüez.

Desecheo Island
Desecheo Island is an uninhabited island with 80–100 ft visibility, located in the Far West of Puerto Rico. It is protected by the USFWS and features large marine life, including sharks, rays, and turtles, in abundance. The island is accessible by day-trip charter from Rincón or Aguadilla, and diving is a primary activity. The best time to visit is from November to April, when seas in the Mona Passage allow for crossings, making it ideal for experiencing the island's pelagic life.
