Yoruba Practitioners in Puerto Rico Face Discrimination and Threats

Published Aug 29, 2026 · via El Nuevo Día

Practitioners of the Yoruba religion in Puerto Rico claim they face discrimination and threats due to a lack of understanding of their spiritual tradition. Despite being present in Puerto Rico for over six decades, the Yoruba religion remains one of the most misunderstood spiritual traditions on the island.

This year, the situation escalated after the unexpected cancellation of a ceremonial activity scheduled to take place in Carolina. Practitioners assert that this incident is a result of the stereotypes and religious discrimination they have long faced.

They emphasize that all they are asking for is respect.
