The municipal government of Salinas announced a hurricane preparedness services fair for Tuesday, September 8, from 9:00 a.m. at Plaza Las Delicias, aimed at orienting residents during the peak month of hurricane season. Mayor Karilyn Bonilla Colón said confirmed participants include SurMed, SaliCoop, the Police Bureau, the Fire Bureau, the Municipal Department of Recreation and Sports, the Tú Vales program, 2Gen Salinas, the Municipal Office for Emergency Management (OMME), and the Ombudsman. Also joining are the DRNA's Vigilantes Corps, Mascotito, the Department of Tourism, Art and Culture, Taller Salud, FirstMedical, and Ponce NHS, among others.
Bonilla Colón, a former director of the agency now known as the Emergency Management and Disaster Administration Bureau, noted the hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. She cited preliminary U.S. National Hurricane Center forecasts suggesting slightly below-average 2026 cyclone activity due to El Niño, and Colorado State University's Meteorological Project estimate of 13 named storms, six hurricanes, and two major hurricanes for 2026 — below historical Atlantic basin averages.
