Salinas is a coastal municipality in the southern part of Puerto Rico, south of Aibonito and Cayey, southeast of Coamo, east of Santa Isabel, and west of Guayama, about 36 miles from San Juan. It is spread over five barrios plus Salinas Pueblo, the downtown area and administrative center, and has a population of roughly 25,789 people.
Founded in 1841, the town's setting along the southern coast is anchored by the Jobos Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, a major natural area shared with neighboring waters, giving Salinas a strong identity tied to its coastline and estuarine ecosystem.
