The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) issued a five-year permit allowing Puerto Rico's government to carry out dry dredging of the Carraízo reservoir, located between Trujillo Alto and Gurabo. Governor Jenniffer González confirmed receipt of the permit in a Facebook video, explaining it will allow removal of sediment accumulated along the reservoir's shoreline, helping store more water.
She noted that dry dredging requires lowering the reservoir's water levels to expose sedimented banks so specialized machinery can operate; equipment is already positioned in the Gurabo area, but recent rain has kept water levels too high to begin. The five-year permit period will let dredging proceed quickly once water levels drop. González also said there are no plans to reactivate the water rationing plan for Carraízo customers, who were under a 48-hour rationing schedule from August 7 to September 2.
She said water levels are currently under observation and rationing remains paused, expressing hope that continued rainfall will keep filling the reservoir via runoff.
