Three American Airlines flights bound for Miami were diverted to Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) in San Juan following an incident involving an Amazon Prime Air cargo plane that had departed from Puerto Rico. Aerostar Puerto Rico, which operates SJU, reported that airport operations continue normally while it monitors effects from a temporary ground stop issued Sunday afternoon at Miami International Airport (MIA) after the Amazon cargo plane ran off the runway upon landing.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the incident occurred around 2:00 p.m. and involved a Boeing 767-300 cargo aircraft. Aerostar said there has been no general disruption to SJU operations, but flights bound for Miami could see changes while MIA restrictions remain in effect.
The next American Airlines flight scheduled from San Juan to Miami was, as of the report, still set to depart at 4:30 p.m., though it could be affected if the situation in Miami persists. Aerostar advised passengers with flights to or from Miami to verify their itinerary status directly with their airline.
