The Museum of Contemporary Art of Puerto Rico (MAC) will host "Diasporican Abstraction: Identities Beyond Representation," an exhibition occupying the entire museum building, opening to the public on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. The show brings together more than 50 artists and collectives from different generations, combining historical and contemporary works to explore how migration, memory, and cultural exchange have shaped new understandings of abstraction and Puerto Rican identity. It is curated by Abdiel D.
Segarra Ríos, MAC's associate curator, and Marianne Ramírez Aponte, the museum's chief curator and executive director. The exhibition draws on collections from Puerto Rico and New York, featuring artists working both inside and outside the archipelago, alongside practices from the Caribbean, Central America, and South America, spanning painting, sculpture, installation, photography, and performance. It frames the diaspora as an active site of cultural production and a lens for rethinking Puerto Rican identity beyond political and geographic borders, addressing the historical divide between art made in Puerto Rico and that made by Puerto Rican artists abroad.
Segarra Ríos said the exhibit proposes "a network of intergenerational relationships between artists of different geographies and cultural contexts" rather than a linear history of abstraction.
