Ricardo 'Ricky' Meléndez is a strong candidate to become the new manager of the Capitanes de Arecibo for the 2027 Baloncesto Superior Nacional (BSN) tournament, according to El Nuevo Día. Meléndez, who played 21 seasons in the league, has been an assistant coach for the team for the past three seasons. Juan Cardona, the previous manager, left the team despite having a year left on his contract and is now in charge of the Gigantes de Carolina-Canóvanas.
Meléndez has experience as a coach in the Puerto Rican Basketball League with the Chicharroneros de Bayamón and is currently in charge of the basketball program at Colegio La Salle. The team had negotiations with former national manager Nelson Colón, but they did not prosper. The Capitanes de Arecibo have not advanced beyond the quarterfinals since winning the championship in 2021 and have a strong native roster led by Ramses Meléndez, Alfonso Plummer, and Rafael Pizón.
Meanwhile, the Indios de Mayagüez have not officially announced the return of manager Iván 'Pipo' Vélez for the 2027 tournament, despite having a contract for the next season.
