Starting Saturday, September 26, a new ordinance in Camuy, Puerto Rico, will prohibit the consumption of alcoholic beverages at all times in gas stations and their surrounding areas. The Ordinance 8, Serie 2026-2027, approved by the Municipal Legislature and signed by Mayor Gabriel Hernández Rodríguez, allows the sale of alcoholic beverages in businesses with the required licenses and permits, but prohibits consumption in parking lots, vehicles, sidewalks, entrances, exits, common areas, and other spaces within gas station premises.
Those who violate the ordinance may face fines of $3,000 to $5,000. According to Mayor Hernández Rodríguez, the ordinance aims to address safety and public order concerns without hindering the sale of alcoholic beverages by legitimate businesses.
The legislation responds to concerns about people consuming alcoholic beverages in gas stations and commercial areas, which can cause noise, obstruct traffic, and affect public order and safety.
