The Puerto Rico Department of Justice, through offices in Aibonito, Arecibo and Bayamón, announced it would file 41 charges against 13 people in what it called a "strong offensive" against sexual abuse. The charges, to be presented in court, include lewd acts, sexual assault, negligence and child abuse/maltreatment.
In the Bayamón case, at least three women and four men will be charged. One suspect, Alexis Vergara Longo, admitted the victims were relatives, that he possessed more than 600 photos and videos of child pornography, and that he even consumed images involving babies.
Justice officials said there are now more adult men seeking out boy victims, reversing the historic pattern that mainly affected girls. In a separate pattern described in the report, incest, lewd acts and abuse occurred from 2020 until January 2025 in the municipality of Patillas, committed by a man while he worked as a police officer.
