Aerostar Airports Holding delivered two new Dodge Durango patrol vehicles, worth $125,726, to the Carolina Municipal Police K-9 unit as part of investments to strengthen security at Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU). The vehicles include temperature control and ventilation systems, sirens, lights, signage and other K-9 operation equipment. Aerostar Puerto Rico president Jorge Hernández said security is a priority and permanent investment for an airport moving millions of passengers annually.
The Carolina Municipal Police maintains a station inside the airport under a services contract funded by Aerostar, with dozens of officers working three daily shifts. Aerostar also outfitted a space in Terminal D for K-9 unit officers who work alongside the Puerto Rico Police. Carolina Mayor José Carlos Aponte noted the delivery complements a municipal investment of over $55,000 for three new drug- and weapon-detection dogs, along with equipment and training.
Since 2019, Aerostar has spent about $2.7 million on services, vehicles, facilities and other resources for the Carolina Municipal Police's airport operations, including Ford Bronco vehicles and internet service in 2024. Two additional Trikke Positron 60V AWD vehicles and training, worth $27,466, will be added soon.
