Puerto Rican medical products company Customed Inc. announced a $12 million expansion of its Fajardo operations, expected to create 35 new jobs and boost the company's sterilization capacity for medical products. Governor Jenniffer González Colón and Department of Economic Development and Commerce Secretary Carlos J. Ríos Pierluisi announced the project Thursday. The investment breaks down into about $4.86 million for machinery and equipment, $4.916 million for infrastructure improvements, and $2.024 million for regulatory compliance.
González Colón said Customed is a Puerto Rican company that has grown from the island for over three decades and is again investing in its people from Fajardo. The expansion will add specialized sterilization infrastructure, including additional chambers, pre-conditioning and aeration rooms, auxiliary systems, and expanded storage and control areas, aimed at increasing sterilization services available to medical device manufacturers in Puerto Rico.
Ríos Pierluisi said the project combines the $12 million investment and 35 jobs with roughly $1.39 million in additional annual payroll, and noted its strategic value for the local supply chain by reducing manufacturers' reliance on sterilization capacity outside Puerto Rico. The 35 new positions will be added to Customed's existing workforce of 30 employees.
