The rise in diesel prices is putting pressure on Puerto Rico's local economy, with transporters and merchants warning that it could drive up distribution and operating costs, eventually increasing the cost of products. The price of diesel has increased by nearly 90% in Puerto Rico compared to last year, reaching $1.60 per liter, or about $6.00 per gallon.
In the United States, diesel prices have broken historical records, exceeding $6.49 and $6.52 per gallon, due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and a shortage of refined fuel. Luis Gueits, president of the Gasoline Retailers Association, stated that the increase in diesel prices affects the entire distribution chain, including groceries, basic necessities, and transportation, and that merchants will likely pass the cost on to consumers.
Gueits noted that the increase in operational costs has been a significant burden for businesses in Puerto Rico.
