Judge Carolina Guzmán Tejada of the Bayamón Court of First Instance found cause for arrest against a couple after a chase in which the man allegedly attempted to run over a Bayamón Municipal Police officer while driving a stolen 2003 Ford Econoline. According to the Department of Justice, the incident occurred on September 24 when agents identified the stolen vehicle in Bayamón.
The suspects, Edwin Rivera Vega, 37, and Anaís Michelle Gómez Santiago, 29, were in the vehicle. When agents tried to intervene, Rivera Vega, who was driving, fled, allegedly trying to run over an officer during the pursuit. The couple abandoned the vehicle near the Jardines de Caparra Urban Train station and were later arrested at the Martínez Nadal station.
Prosecutor Rosalyn García Pastrana presented charges including aggravated damage, use of violence or intimidation, resistance or obstruction of public authority, illegal trade of vehicles and parts, and recklessness or negligence. The judge found cause for arrest on all charges, setting bail at $350,000 for Rivera Vega and $150,000 for Gómez Santiago. Both were taken to prison, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for October 8.
