Puerto Rico's Department of Justice confirmed the Bayamón prosecutor's office would file charges against a 16-year-old accused of killing his grandmother and wounding his brother in an altercation at a Guaynabo shopping center. The minor is expected to be charged as an adult. Authorities said the incident was reported around 2:06 p.m. Saturday at the Santa María shopping center on Route PR-177 in Guaynabo, after a 911 call reported a dispute between two brothers.
During the confrontation, the grandmother of both young men, Lourdes Pérez Kercado, 67, suffered multiple injuries that killed her at the scene. Her other grandson, Jeremy Cabrera Rosa, 22, was also wounded, suffering multiple injuries from a sharp object; paramedics treated him at the scene before he was transported to a hospital for further care.
The 16-year-old was detained and remains in police custody. The Department of Justice said it would provide additional information once the court proceedings conclude.
