Hiram Torres Montalvo, secretary of the Department of Consumer Affairs (DACO), will resign this week after winning election as Cataño's next mayor in Sunday's special election. He does not yet have an exact swearing-in date but estimated the process could be completed within a week to a week and a half. Before officially taking office, he must complete courses with the Office of Government Ethics (OEG) and the Office of the Comptroller, and begin a transition process with the municipal administration.
Speaking on 'Pegao's en la mañana' on Radio Isla 1320AM, Torres Montalvo said he has begun identifying members for his transition committee, which will review operations of municipal departments before the change in administration, describing the process as tedious and requiring availability from 8 a.m. through long meetings. He said he has moved past the campaign and holds no grudges against those who didn't support him, expressing hope to meet with all his former rivals.
About 3,730 voters participated in Sunday's election, exceeding the projected 2,500–3,000 turnout. Torres Montalvo won with 1,725 votes, defeating Bethzaida Rodríguez Torres, José M. Rodríguez Ocaña, and Fernando L. (name cut off in source).
