Aníbal Vega Borges, electoral commissioner of the New Progressive Party (PNP), said Friday that courts rejected on four separate occasions challenges filed by three municipal legislators seeking to disqualify Hiram Torres Montalvo's candidacy for mayor of Cataño, just two days before a special election. Vega Borges said the Puerto Rico Supreme Court declared the legislators' petitions 'no ha lugar' (without merit) twice; the legislators had first filed a complaint before the State Elections Commission.
Regarding Sunday's special election, voting will take place at 12 polling stations, with expected turnout of between 2,500 and 3,000 voters. The PNP expects to announce a winner by 4:00 p.m. The party's command center will be located at the Rafael Cordero school. Additionally, 20 inmates from various penal institutions who were able to prove residency in Cataño are entitled to vote in the process.
