LUMA Energy and Genera PR must justify a requested rate increase of six cents per kilowatt hour to the Puerto Rico Energy Bureau, which could raise residential electricity bills by up to $48. A virtual technical conference is scheduled for today, September 28, at 10:00 a.m., where the companies and the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (AEE) will discuss the requested increase, differences in fuel cost projections, and gas supply calculations.
They must also explain the interruption of gas supply in San Juan since September 16 and the operation of diesel units. Former AEE director Justo González stated that citizens will likely pay an increase in their electricity bills due to global conflicts, such as the situation in Iran and the war between Russia and Ukraine.
The Energy Bureau will verify the calculations and determine if the increase is justified and if it will be the requested amount or a different one.
