The Recinto Universitario de Mayagüez (RUM) and the Universidad Adventista de las Antillas have strengthened security measures after a man, identified as Fred Guillont Juarbe, made threatening statements publicly, referencing educational centers, professors, and students. According to a video posted on social media, Guillont Juarbe expressed his intention to 'take out' all 'terrorists', including professors and students, and showed a firearm.
The RUM's interim rector, Miguel A. Muñoz, reported that the university notified authorities and activated its security protocols. The RUM filed a complaint with the police and took legal action to protect the university community. Authorities informed the RUM that Guillont Juarbe is in custody while the investigation continues.
As a precautionary measure, the RUM has increased surveillance with additional police rounds and coordination with security personnel. The Universidad Adventista also notified authorities and sought protection measures, resulting in a court-issued protection order that prohibits Guillont Juarbe from entering or approaching university facilities and official activity locations.
