Over 300 seniors from long-term care centers in Arecibo and Hatillo participated in the 'Festival de Talentos Dorados: Dejando Huellas' at the Manuel 'Petaca' Iguina Coliseum in Arecibo. The event, promoted by House of Representatives President Carlos 'Johnny' Méndez and Representative Edgar Robles, featured activities such as modeling, acting, singing, painting, and a domino tournament.
Participants from centers including Miraflores, Campea, and Vistas del Mar Elderly took part in the event, which lasted several hours. Winners received gift baskets, certificates, and participation medals. According to Méndez, the initiative aims to provide seniors with a space to share and demonstrate their talents.
Robles highlighted the importance of promoting activities that foster conviviality and well-being among this population. Arecibo's population is 27.8% seniors, and in Puerto Rico, seniors represent around 34.5% of the population. Méndez has proposed budget allocations for seniors for fiscal years 2025-2026 and 2026-2027, including funds for accessible housing and programs for seniors with special needs.
