Groups and individuals from Puerto Rico and its diaspora urged the New York City Council to approve resolutions expressing rejection of the Fiscal Oversight Board (JSF), the former Law 22, and the Esencia project. The measures, authored by New York City Council Member Alexa Avilés, were discussed in a public hearing at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem.
One resolution calls for a specific date for the exit of the JSF, which has controlled Puerto Rico's financial decisions for over a decade. Another resolution supports a pending state legislative bill that would limit the ability of hedge funds to acquire debt from foreign governments. María del Mar Rosa Rodríguez, president of the Puerto Rican Association of University Professors, stated that the University of Puerto Rico has less than half of the budget it should have due to the JSF's financial control.
Rosa Seguí, a former Senate candidate, said that daily life in Puerto Rico is extremely difficult due to the impact of austerity measures imposed by the JSF.
