San Juan Mayor Miguel A. Romero Lugo has proposed a project to increase the minimum monthly salary of municipal police officers to $2,900, effective October 1, 2026. This move is part of the Municipal Administration's commitment to raise the minimum salary to $3,000 monthly during the current four-year term. The measure aims to improve the salaries of police officers who currently earn less than $2,900 monthly.
The approved budget for the 2026-2027 fiscal year includes funds for this increase. The proposal builds on previous salary adjustments, which have raised the minimum monthly salary from $2,400 in 2022 to $2,810 currently. The mayor's initiative also seeks to make the police force more attractive to new recruits and contribute to the goal of hiring at least 100 additional municipal police officers per fiscal year.
Romero Lugo emphasized the importance of recognizing the work of police officers and providing them with better equipment and tools to perform their duties. The proposed salary increase is a step towards achieving the administration's goal of establishing a $3,000 monthly minimum salary during the current term.
