Family and friends of Gendy Rivera Nevárez and Carlos Meléndez Guadalupe, parents of a baby born via emergency cesarean after a traffic accident in Manatí, gathered to pray outside the hospital where the couple remains hospitalized. The accident occurred at the intersection of PR-149 and PR-643 when a pickup truck, driven by 23-year-old Edward J. Rivera Cordero, allegedly ran a red light and hit the vehicle carrying the family.
The couple's 13-year-old son was also in the vehicle and is in stable condition. Meléndez Guadalupe is in a more compromised condition and blood platelet donors are being sought. The newborn baby, whose mother was seven months pregnant at the time of the accident, is stable.
Rivera Cordero refused to take a breath test for alcohol and also declined a blood test, prompting authorities to seek a court order for a sample. The family was returning from a 'gender reveal' celebration when the accident occurred.
