Carlos O. Ortiz Aponte, a 29-year-old resident of Barranquitas, was charged on Friday with violating Article 222 of the Penal Code, known as 'insufficient funds’, for issuing a check for $7,148.25 without sufficient funds in his bank account. The alleged offense occurred in February when Ortiz Aponte hired Quality Concremix to supply 50 yards of cement and paid with a check that had insufficient funds.
According to the police report, Ortiz Aponte knew his account had insufficient funds. The case was investigated by Agent Alfredo González of the Aibonito Criminal Investigations Corps’ Fraud Division and prosecutor Gilberto Gierbolini Merino. Judge Roberto Capestany Quiñonez set a $7,000 bond, which Ortiz Aponte posted, and scheduled a preliminary hearing for October 20, 2026.
If found guilty, Ortiz Aponte could face a three-year prison sentence and/or a $10,000 fine, as well as restitution for the amount owed.
