A magnitude 3.93 earthquake struck western Puerto Rico early Saturday, according to the Puerto Rico Seismic Network (RSPR). The quake occurred at 6:35 AM at a depth of approximately 32 kilometers, with its epicenter located in the Mona Canyon at 18.466 latitude and -67.351 longitude. The RSPR, part of the University of Puerto Rico’s Mayagüez Campus Geology Department, detected and analyzed the seismic activity.
As the earthquake was considered mild, there were no tsunami warnings, alerts, or watches issued for Puerto Rico or the US Virgin Islands. Puerto Rico is located in an area of interaction between the North American and Caribbean tectonic plates, resulting in frequent seismic activity. The RSPR identifies the Mona Canyon as one of the region’s seismic zones.
