The Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP) will celebrate its 80th anniversary from October 16 to 18 at the Ponce Hilton Hotel. Under the slogan 'From struggle to victory', the party announced the celebration, which will include multiple commemorative activities about its historical trajectory. Juan Dalmau Ramírez, the party’s former gubernatorial candidate and general secretary, expressed satisfaction with the party’s firm and constant struggle for Puerto Rico, but also acknowledged that there is still much to be done.
He noted that the celebration occurs at an extraordinary political moment for the independence movement, after Dalmau’s 2024 run for governor drew about 31% of the vote; the party holds five seats in the Legislative Assembly, three of them under the minority-representation law. The anniversary celebration will culminate on October 18 with a grand event at the hotel’s Grand Salon, starting at 12 pm.
Corrected October 4: an earlier version said the party “obtained around 31% of the votes”; the 31% was Juan Dalmau Ramírez’s share in the 2024 race for governor, and three of the party’s five legislative seats came under the minority-representation law.
