Why this matters: The incident highlights the risk of fatal accidents on Puerto Rico’s roads, particularly at night, and the importance of cooperation with law enforcement investigations.

A driver who fatally struck a woman in Cupey, San Juan, with his 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage on Sunday morning initially left the scene, but later reported the incident to police. The accident occurred at approximately 2:54 AM at the intersection of PR-1 and PR-176, near a Tren Urbano station. The woman, who has not been identified, suffered fatal injuries.

The driver, a Bayamón resident, was identified by police and initially refused to take a blood alcohol test after being informed of the procedure. Authorities obtained a search warrant to collect a blood sample. The vehicle was seized as part of the investigation, and police are awaiting the results of the analysis.

Agent Brian Sanabria of the San Juan Highway Patrol Division and prosecutor Iván Rivera Labrador are handling the case.
