At a glance

  • Blanca Medina, former ADSEF administrator, alleges she was removed for refusing to sign a $38.5 million contract
  • Senate Family Committee Chair Wandy Soto says the commission has received documentation from both parties

Why this matters: The Senate’s inquiry into the allegations against the Family Department and ADSEF could impact the administration of social services and funding in Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico Department of the Family Secretary Suzanne Roig Fuertes must appear this Wednesday at 10:00 AM before the Senate Family Committee to answer questions following allegations by Blanca Medina, the former administrator of the Administration for the Socioeconomic Development of the Family (ADSEF). Medina was also summoned and must appear the same day, in the afternoon.

It became known that Medina has put her allegations in writing in a sworn statement and went to the Office of the Inspector General (OIG). Medina alleges she was removed from her post for refusing to sign a $38.5 million contract, which she says she was improperly pressured to sign, to favor the company NOLA Education and Star Academy.

Roig Fuertes rejects the accusations, saying there was never a contract for those purposes. She also made serious claims that Medina threatened her on several occasions with allegedly attacking her physically. Sen. Wandy Soto, chair of the Senate Family Committee, said these are very serious accusations and charges, which is why both officials were summoned. She said the commission has already received documentation from both sides.
