Fundación SM will present on October 23 the results of a study of 600 teachers at public and private schools in Puerto Rico. The research examines why they chose the profession, their emotional state, the difficulties they face at work and factors tied to teacher burnout. Judy García Allende, head of Fundación SM in Puerto Rico and coordinator of the surveys, said the goal is to make the teaching profession visible and share what teachers say and how they perceive the evolution of education.
She said it is essential to open spaces for dialogue and action on behalf of teachers, whom she described as the professionals with the greatest multiplier effect on social and cultural development. The Investigación docente en Puerto Rico 2026 included preschool, primary and secondary educators from the island’s seven educational regions, in both public and private schools.
It looks at the conditions under which teachers work, the situations that contribute to burnout, the symptoms they link to the profession and the areas where they see room for improvement. It also covers the attributes they consider important for teaching. The results were not released in the announcement Fundación SM issued on Monday.
The presentation will take place Friday, October 23, in the conference room of United Way de Puerto Rico in Santurce, and the publication will be available free in print and digital formats from that date. The study is part of an initiative of Fundación SM’s Observatorio de la Escuela en Iberoamérica and will allow comparison of Puerto Rico’s data with studies done in Brazil, Chile, Spain and Mexico.
