Judge Ana M. Meléndez Renaud of the Humacao Court determined on Tuesday that there is probable cause for trial against Eddie Mojica Peña, 41, on charges of attempted murder and mistreatment of an elderly person. The charges stem from an incident that occurred while Mojica Peña was working as a caregiver at the Casa Dorada home in the Collores neighborhood of Las Piedras.
On July 11, a neighbor called the police after hearing the cries of an 87-year-old patient and seeing Mojica Peña come onto her own property, where he began speaking incoherently and pounding on her door. When police arrived, they found the patient, who is partially blind and suffers from Alzheimer’s, lying on the floor. The paramedics who treated her found abrasions all over her body and a head trauma. She was taken to the emergency room for treatment.
Mojica Peña was initially ordered to be arrested and held on $500,000 bail, which he did not pay, resulting in his incarceration. The reading of the indictment is scheduled for October 16 and the trial for November 5.
Corrected October 8: an earlier version said police found the patient’s abrasions and head trauma. According to Primera Hora, it was the paramedics who gave her first aid who found them. It also said the neighbor saw Mojica Peña enter “the property”; Primera Hora reports that he came onto the neighbor’s own property and pounded on her door.
